Methyl Red: Methyl red positive, this shows that it produces acidic waste.

Motility: Motility positive, sticking an inoculating needle in to a test tube with agar was used to test this.

Hemolysis: Gamma hemolysis, it ate none of the sheep blood agar

Aerobic, Anaerobic, or Facultative: Aerobic, it needs oxygen to live. This was tested by putting E. coli covered agar plates in a pickle jar with a burning candle. This would get rid of all of the oxygen in the jar.

Bauer-Kirby: I used Penicillin, Ampicillin, Tetracycline, and Hand Sanitizer. After 24 hours of being exposed, Ampicillin had a zone of inhibition of 25 mm, Penicillin had none, Tetracycline had 20 mm, and Hand Sanitizer had nothing. Ampicillin works by making gram negative bacteria have the inability to produce peptidoglycan. Penicillin works by killing the cell walls of bacteria. Tetracycline works by binding specifically to the 30S ribosome of the bacteria, preventing attachment of the aminoacyl tRNA to the RNA-ribosome complex.

Found In: E. coli is found in food such as meats and vegetables. You can get E. coli by eating undercooked meat, drinking unfiltered water, drinking unpasteurized milk, and working with cattle. Meat can get contaminated because the cow may have the E. coli bacteria in its intestines, and when the cow is slaughtered, the E. coli is spread around the meat.

How it Travels: E. coli is often associated with Salmonella. E. coli normally live in large intestines, but certain strains can seep into the blood stream. Then they infect your red blood cells and spread throughout the body. This causes bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. There are no treatments for E. coli, but the best thing to do is drink lots of fluids to keep hydrated. Also, avoid taking anti-diarrheal medications. This slows down your digestive system, causing the toxin to stay circulating in your body.
